relationship that is told from the perspective of an abusive
teenage boy. It opens in court when his girlfriend’s
restraining order is being granted by a judge who requires
as part of the court order that he attend workshops for
young men who batter their girlfriends and keep a journal of
what happened in his relationship, from beginning to end. It
illustrates the change he undergoes as he attends the
sessions and tells the story of his relationship, from
denial of his abusive actions to the realization that he has
serious problems, including a proclivity for violence, and
eventually acceptance of the consequences of his actions for
his relationship and the need to change his attitude and his

Young Adults and Teen Victims of Dating Violence
Summary:
Dreamland
is a fictional account of a violent dating relationship told
from the perspective of a teenage girl whose boyfriend
becomes more and more violent as their relationship
progresses. She copes with his behavior and covers up the
abuse until it is witnessed by friends and family. It
depicts the evolution of the relationship from the perfect
romance to nightmare as her boyfriend becomes more and more
controlling, and is increasingly violent. She deteriorates
as everything in her life becomes focused on trying to
predict the abuse and avoid angering him, until she realizes
that nothing she can do will prevent or control his
behavior. The relationship ends only after her parents
witness him beating in front of their house and take her to
counseling. This book illustrates not only what dating
violence can look like, but also the difficulties teens face
in choosing and leaving an abusive partner.

Teens and Parents and teen/child victims of internet
predators
Summary:
Katie.com-My
Story is about a girl who comes into contact with a man
through an internet chat room and begins an on-line
relationship with him that culminates in their arranging to
meet in person. Katie discovers during their brief meeting
that Mark is a much older man than he pretended to be, who
she finds out later from the police, after his sexual
advances are interrupted by her mother, is actually a sexual
predator who lures his victims through the internet and has
raped several other girls and a young man. This is
particularly devastating for Katie, who is still attached to
Mark who made her feel special in a time when she felt all
alone. And who also feels responsible for the incident
because she encouraged their on-line relationship and
encounters blame for it from every corner. This book is an
emotionally detailed example for teens and adults about how
confusing it is to be a teen, negotiating new kinds of
relationships while trying to establish their own identity
and become an adult, and further, the affect victimization
can have on a person at this developmental stage. Katie uses
her story to emphasize the ease with which predators can use
the internet to prey on minors who would normally be thought
of as being in a safe environment and gives tips on ensuring
children’s internet safety for parents as well as a list of
web resources for increasing internet safety.

Male Sexual Assault Victims or People who work with Male
Victims
Summary:
Male on Male
Rape is a hard look at the effects of male on male rape
at the individual and societal levels. Michael Scarce
discusses the ramifications of the language we use in laws
and speech and how it harms and silences male victims of
sexual assault, using personal stories, the letter of the
law, and extensive academic research. The target audience is
adult male survivors, but Scarce acknowledges the existence
of many teen survivors, and though they are not specifically
addressed, his assessment gives insight into the response to
sexual victimization of males in general. He indicates that
victims of male rape tend to be in their late teens to late
twenties at the time of the attack. Scarce’s focus is not
only to help survivors but to expose the impediments of
society’s treatment, or lack thereof, of male victims of
sexual assault in general. He exposes myths about male rape,
including where and how it occurs, and offers initiatives
and strategies to address sexual violence of men on other
men in both preventative and healing capacities.

tactics to confront dating abuse, such as: how to educate
young women about safe dating, warning signs of unhealthy
relationships, what to do if a friend is being abused, how
to intervene effectively and communicate with a victim of
relationship abuse, how to break the cycle of control,
helping a victim break away from an abuser safely, what to
do if you suspect your child is abusive, and prevention tips
for bringing up girls and boys to have healthy

Summary:

reenactment of pieces of interviews conducted by Dr. Lisak,
the Director of Men’s
Sexual Trauma
Research
Center at the
University of
Massachusetts at
Boston, with fraternity members
during one of his studies of sexually predatory male
behavior. In it, a college male explains how unsuspecting
women are targeted for intoxication and rape by members of
the fraternity. He uses works like “target” and “prey” to
refer to the women. After dehumanizing their victims with
this language, he then blames them for their own
victimization. The interview indicates that these rapes are
a regular occurrence on and off campus, and the rapists are
usually never detected, much less punished in any way. The
video closes with an analysis of the interview and the
interviewee, including the tones and meanings of the
language the fraternity member used to describe the rape
behavior, by Dr. Lisak.

Summary:
Warning!
Dating may be hazardous to your health! presents dating
violence as an “equal opportunity social problem” that can
happen to people of all ages, races, and socio-economic
backgrounds, using stories and quotes by victims and
survivors of dating abuse. It defines dating violence not by
the age of the victim but by the nature of the relationship
between the abuser and the abused. McShane provides a
discussion of the social context that allows and even
encourages dating violence through the myths and fallacies
believed by both perpetrators, victims, and much of the rest
of society. This book is arranged in four parts:
The Issue, What Happens-Who It Happens To and Why, The
